The Herald Express South Devon Business Awards have really become one of the highlights in the local business calendar.
Having assessed over 1,000 business entries in the time I have been involved with the awards, it never ceases to amaze me how many fantastic businesses there are in the area.
I have seen at first hand the successful, innovative, and sometimes quirky companies, working hard in the area.
Awards are a chance to recognise quality, aspiration and contribution of local businesses
Being a judge is an important role and one that I take very seriously. While it involves considerable time, assessing and analysing the entries before selecting the shortlisted companies, I always am very respectful that the applicants have spent valuable time preparing and submitting the entry.

The panel get together on ‘Judging Day’ to scrutinise the entries and share thoughts about the applicants before selecting the finalists.
How 10 Devon people made their millions
After much debate with all the differing opinions, we have to reach a unanimous decision – a bit like 12 Angry Men, with Jim Parker taking Henry Fonda’s role!
Talking to previous finalists, it is clear to see the impact of being involved with the awards. It can be significant for the businesses, giving a real boost to all the employees, attract new staff, new suppliers and obviously new customers. The benefits can be far reaching.
There are countless companies and organisations working hard to bring prosperity to this beautiful area and it is great to be in a position to help celebrate their success.
That is why for me, it is a great honour and privilege to judge the Herald Express South Devon Business Awards.
