Kayaker dies in Dartmoor after getting trapped by fallen tree

A kayaker has died after getting trapped under a partially submerged tree on a river in Dartmoor.The man was with a group of four others on the River Dart between Dartmeet and Newbridge in Devon when he got trapped, park rangers said.Part of the river was closed off while the emergency services recovered the body.Rob Steemson, a Dartmoor National Park ranger, said the river was “roaring” when the man died.More on this story and others from Devon

“The river obviously rises and falls quite quickly,” he said.”With the heavy winds as well, quite a few trees have come down overnight and unfortunately that’s what’s trapped this person.”

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team said they found the kayaker “still in his upturned kayak, both of which were below the water line trapped beneath a partially submerged tree”.A spokesman said the team “extend our sincere condolences to the family friends and his paddling companions”.He said his companions “were all very well equipped for the conditions and very experienced, in recovering their colleague”.
