One of Exeter’s most historic hotels has just completed the latest stage of its extensive multi-million-pound refurbishment scheme.
As part of an ambitious £2.1m plan, the Mercure Exeter Rougemont has already updated all 98 of its guest bedrooms and each now features a fantastic modern design, while also retaining period features that make the city centre hotel so unique for those who stay there.
However, it’s perhaps the second phase of the grand plan of which the hotel on Queen Street is most proud. With Christmas fast approaching, a spectacular overhaul of both the Devonshire Suite and the Cavendish Suite couldn’t have come at a better time, with more than 5,000 guests expected to visit the Rougemont during the festive period.

The two rooms still maintain the hotel’s historical charm, but their design has been fully updated to suit today’s modern requirement of a fresh event space to accommodate every event.
The hotel was built back in the late 19th century on the former Exeter Borough Prison site. When the prison closed in September 1863, the prisoners were moved to the old Devon County Gaol. The foundation stone for the hotel was laid by the Devon and Exeter Hotel Company back in April 1877, before the Rougemont eventually opened its doors in May 1879.
The hotel has continued to prosper, and over the years its name was changed to The Thistle Hotel and reverted back to the Rougemont Hotel, before The Mercure Group renamed it the Mercure Exeter Rougemont Hotel.
Scott Lambton, the hotel’s meeting and events sales manager, says: “Our Cavendish ballroom has been one of the main focuses of our recent refurbishment and, while keeping the traditional characteristics of the room, we have added a lighter, new colour to the walls.”
“It’s been a transformation from the historical ballroom into a fresh new elegant space, with all its quirks, for weddings, parties and conferences.”
Indeed, the Rougemont Hotel’s tailor-made wedding packages start at less than £2,200 and contain everything you need to ensure your big day is a truly memorable occasion for everyone involved.
